GM Foods: Myths and Deceptions

Each year, millions of Americans buy processed foods, including those made with corn, soy, canola, sugar beets, tomatoes, potatoes, yellow squash, zucchini and more.

With each purchase, those consumers are buying unregulated and largely untested Genetically Modified (GM) foods in everyday products: breakfast cereals, snack foods, sodas, frozen meals, pasta sauces, baby foods, etc., without knowing they are made with GM crops.

What are GM foods? GM foods are made by splicing genes from various species (bacteria, insects, mammals, etc.) into crops so they are more resistant to pests, disease and weather. It’s estimated that 70 or 80% of all processed foods are now made with GM crops.

A new, breakthrough article called, “GM Foods: Myths and Deceptions” explores shocking myths and industry deceptions about GM foods (also called Genetically Modified Organisms or GMOs). Expert quotes and credible source links are included. Here are some key findings:

1. There is no meaningful FDA regulation or safety testing for GM crops or foods. There are no FDA labeling requirements either. Since 1992, the FDA has assumed that GM foods are substantially the same as their traditional counterparts without any independent proof.

2. The companies that produce GM foods have veto power over independent research into their foods and crops, blocking independent testing, especially on human subjects.

3. Internal memos show that FDA scientists and other groups have repeatedly warned of health threats from these foods, including allergies, asthma, digestive and autoimmune problems, liver damage, faster aging, etc. They have been ignored.

This quote from the American Academy of Environmental Medicine is telling:

“Multiple animal studies show significant immune dysregulation, including upregulation of cytokines associated with asthma, allergy, and inflammation. Animal studies also show altered structure and function of the liver, including altered lipid and carbohydrate metabolism as well as cellular changes that could lead to accelerated aging. . . .Changes in the kidney, pancreas and spleen have also been documented.”
