There is a new military mission going on in the St. Louis area called “Operation Shower.” No, it is not a top-secret Air Force process for controlling the weather; it is a Missouri based charity that reaches out to expecting military women and wives. The 40th “Operation Baby Shower” took place at Scott Air Force base in Mascoutah, Illinois Tuesday night.
The organization accepts donations from corporations and handmade items from individuals to throw “the kind of shower your best friend would give you,” says founder, LeAnn Morrissey, of Clayton, Missouri.
Most of the women are military-moms-to-be, or those who recently had babies, with spouses soon be deployed, already on duty overseas or who are Wounded Warriors. So far, the Scott AFB Officers Club has hosted the giant baby showers of forty women from the St. Louis area including a few active duty military members.
Six years ago, Morrissey started the not-for-profit organization in her basement. “One of our main goals at Operation Shower is to give other people the opportunity to say thank you to military families,” she says. Since then her small staff and a handful of volunteers have put on many baby showers across the country, touching the lives of over 1700 military families.
Col. Kyle Kremer, Scott AFB Installation Commander commends “Operation Shower” for lifting moral and maintaining a family atmosphere. “It`s a wonderful support,” he said, speaking of the 40th operation. It “coincides with what`s going on with the government shutdown by providing that extra relief during incredibly challenging times and unknowns.” Additional support in these troubling times, can be provided by the Air Force`s Airman and Family Readiness Center.
