Salvaged Photos Restored

Photos salvaged from the May 20 Oklahoma tornadoes will be restored free of charge

The May tornadoes that touched down in and around Moore, Oklahoma destroyed homes, belongings and lives. Many of the things that were lost will never be replaced. However, for some people lost photographs will not be one of them. Thousands of lost photographs where found in the aftermath of the disaster and are in the process of being cleaned, restored and returned to their owners. The Oklahoma Photo Rescue Project was set up shortly after the tragedy and the volunteers that run it are getting close to reuniting lost photos with their owners.

Carole Adams’s family home was destroyed and she knows they are lucky to be alive. When you lose everything even recovering a small thing is hard to put into words. Some of their most important photographs where damaged but recovered in the debris. "My son got in there and dug and found this out. It was in a big antique frame," Adams said. "It's unexplainable because after you lose everything..." She and her husband took the photos to the Oklahoma School of Photography in Moore.

Volunteers working along with Kristi Brummal at the school have been restoring them and thousands of others. They have been working on them for months. The photos are being cataloged and in less than a month they will be ready to be returned to their owners. "Having that one small bit of something back can make all the difference. The one photo to hang back on the wall, even if it's a new wall. The one thing that links your past to your future, a memory, it's irreplaceable," says Brummal.

The photos will be displayed on the Suburban Baptist Church website. Anyone who lost photos during the tornado will be able to pick them up at the Suburban Baptist Church in Moore after November 9th, Brummal said. New photos will be added every day so she encourages people to keep an eye on the website.
