New Recycling Changes Will Cut Disposal Costs in Half

Recycling changes at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden will take effect next year

After a dumpster diving investigation, it appears the soldiers stationed at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden in Wiesbaden, Germany are well on their way to being compliant to recycling changes that are coming to the garrison. The non-recyclable dumpster trash at several buildings in Aukamm Housing were sorted through to find recyclables by the Directorate of Public Works' Environmental Division. "I'm happily surprised that people are doing a pretty good job," said Marty Hanson, a contractor for the division.

New soldiers from Heidelberg will be familiar with the planned changes, which include more stringently enforced repercussions for people who do not recycle, bio-waste containers and locked recyclable stations, said Directorate of Public Work Operations and Maintenance solid waste manager, Peter Zeisberger. The changes are planned to go into effect in about one year says Zeisberger. In November, offices throughout the garrison will begin receiving 5,000 paper-recycling containers.

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden also contains 1,320 barracks spaces and 2,250 housing units. We stand to save a lot of money by increasing recycling, said Zeisberger. It costs $516 a year to dispose of residual trash, which is the remaining trash after recycling. If this trash is picked up every other week instead of weekly, it will only cost $258 a year for a 240-liter container, he said. For the entire Army Family Housing area, it is currently more than $600,000 a year to dispose of the residual waste. That cost will be cut in half once the new changes go into effect. It not only saves money but it saves the planet as well, Zeisberger said.
