Researchers Find Some Positive Results from Fibromyalgia Medication

Brain imaging may hold key to noting who will need assistance with affliction

A recent study in the field of anesthesiology has now suggested that the role of brain imaging is the ability to assess the potential treatment for chronic pain.

The study is coming out of the University of Michigan and its researchers, as they are the first to utilize the imaging procedures in order to track actions of pregabalin. The drug is known as Lyrica, and is used to prescribe patients who are currently suffering from neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia.

There are now three different types of imaging procedures were performed: Spectroscopy functional magnetic resonance imaging proton magnetic resonance, and functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging that was noted in the 17 patients with fibromyalgia.

The affliction is a disorder thought to be some form of disturbance within the central nervous system and how it processes pain. The effects of the affliction is are found in over 10 million individual within the United States That number constitutes around 4.5% of the world's population.

Patients who suffer from the affliction have found spontaneously arising pain throughout their bodies, despite there being no damage to the body. Chronic pain is a common symptom, however depression and anxiety also often persist.

Research on the matter found that patience had heightened activity in particular regions of the brain. Now research conducted at U-M Health System suggests that pregabalin has worked to reduce the glutamate in insula within animals. The reductions were accompanied with insula connectivity and a reduction in clinical pain ratings, according to researchers.

“The significance of this study is that it demonstrates that pharmacologic therapies for chronic pain can be studied with brain imaging,” says lead study author Richard Harris, Ph.D., assistant professor of anesthesiology at the University of Michigan.

“The results could point to a future in which more targeted brain imaging approaches can be used during pharmacological treatment of chronic widespread pain, rather than the current trial-and-error approach.”
