Large Flux in Temperature Causes Broken Water Lines

Icy weather conditions and burst pipes caused flood in the streets of Chicago

With the icy weather and frozen conditions that covered Chicago over the weekend, frozen pipes were the likely cause of a sprinkler system bursting. The result of which was damaged businesses and a slippery street that was a hazard to the neighborhood.

A leak within a fire system was said to be the likely cause as the Pulaski Road was covered with water, which then froze. Firefighters had to wade through knee-deep ice-water in order to get to the cause of the leak.

The building's sprinkler system was said to have burst near 11 pm and water was sent pouring into the street, according to the fire authority. Those at the scene were wading in the water in order to get to the genesis of the leak, according to managing deputy commissioner of the Department of Water Management, Bill Bresnahan.

The fire department fixed the leak and used salt spreaders to treat the ice that had forced, according to police. The sprinkler system burst at the Columbia Sportswear as well, according to Bresnahan. Gain, salt-spreaders were used at the scene.

Each of the leaks was said to have been caused by the severity of the icy weather. The National Weather Service had reported that temperatures fell to 6 below zero within the Chicago area that night.

Currently, there is no tally of the damage done to either business due to the flooding.
