Think Out Of the Box When Couponing

New technologies are changing the way shrewd shoppers save on groceries and household goods

On November 8th, Angela Chastain hosted a Basics of Couponing class at the Babcock Library in Ashford, Connecticut and she shared quite a few tips on saving money at the checkout counter. New technologies are changing the way we find savings, she said, but there is still a lot of clipping paper involved in couponing.

For example, coupons can be sent directly to your smartphone or e-coupons that can be downloaded to your favorite store’s loyalty card. You just register on specialized websites that list the coupons, check the ones you want and they are automatically downloaded to your card. They are also automatically deducted at the checkout counter.

Due in large part to fanatical shoppers that go to extremes to pay little or nothing for groceries, as seen on TV programs, couponing has come back into the mainstream lately. “While most people aren’t going to devote the time equivalent of a full-time job to couponing,” said Chastain, “they still can save a lot of money if they’re willing to do some planning and organizing.”

When it comes to savings, it is a good idea to think out of the box and look for bargains in some unexpected places. She buys toilet paper from Staples, for example, when the office supply store has it on sale.

Chastain moved to Connecticut from Indiana several years ago and was shocked at how expensive household goods and groceries were here. That is when she started using coupons and other cost saving methods to feed her family.

"I have three teenage boys and they eat a lot… They’ve been known to go through 12 gallons of milk in a week," she said. Chastain says she spends about five hours per week obtaining coupons and also gets many items free of charge, “including the computer paper I print my coupons on," she added.
