LED Christmas Lights are Safer and More Energy Efficient than Old-Fashioned Incandescent Bulbs

The savings you will realize from replacing your old holiday lights will pay for itself in less energy consumption, even if your old lights still work fine.

In 2003, the Department of Energy estimated that Christmas lights in the United States used up 2.22 terawatt-hours of energy per year. This is roughly equivalent to the energy consumed by 200,000 homes annually.

All at a time when most of the population are just about to see their heating bills spike with the oncoming of winter cold weather. Yet most Americans, who are also maxing out their credit cards buying gifts, still indulge in this display of holiday and good cheer.

In recent years, fortunately, Christmas lights have been gradually switching over to LED. A wise consumer would consider throwing out those old-fashioned incandescent bulbs and spending some of that good cheer money on their LED counterparts, which are 90 percent more efficient. It may just make them a little more cheerful in January when the bills start rolling in.

To discard something that works and replace it with an energy-efficient version, generally and environmentally speaking is not economically advisable; since the energy required producing it is rarely greater than the savings it offers. However, LED holiday lights are an exception to this rule.

A new strand of LEDs will probably last you the rest of your life and you will realize a significant savings from day one. They are also much safer than old-fashioned incandescent bulbs and less likely to start a fire.

This is an important thing to consider when wrapping them around a highly flammable, sap filled Christmas tree. Old-fashioned incandescent lights are also far worse for the environment; they do not last nearly as long as LEDs and use 10 times as much electricity.
