The team began in 1968 during an expansion year when the NBA was trying to increase the number of teams. The team has only won the league once in 1971, with a handful of other victories in conferences and divisions throughout the years.

They continued to do well over the next few years until they acquired Lew Alcindor who became a Muslim and changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabar.
