INDIE LEGAL DRAMA IN POST-PRODUCTION AND RAISING FUNDS ON KICKSTARTER FOR FESTIVAL SCREENING

Chicago, IL – Independent Filmmaker Katherine Nero learned about Kickstarter last year during a fundraising party for her feature-length film project, For the Cause.  A friend recommended that she give the online fundraising platform a try.  Ms. Nero confessed, “Kickstarter’s ‘all-or-nothing’ policy seemed too risky at first.  However, I soon realized that the raised stakes were beneficial for the film project.  I had to seriously consider the amount of money I could raise as opposed to what I wanted to raise.”  Ms. Nero launched a successful Kickstarter campaign that concluded in April 2012, reaching the $10,000 goal with two days to spare.

For the Cause intertwines history, justice, love and family into a compelling story between father, mother and daughter.

Mirai Scott, a civil rights attorney, is contacted by her estranged father, a former Black Panther who left his family in Chicago and went underground 30 years ago to escape a murder charge.  He urges Mirai to take his case.  Initially, Mirai is hesitant to defend a man she doesn’t know.  However, her passion for justice and curiosity about her father take over, and she commits herself wholeheartedly to his defense, despite objections raised by her mother. Mirai’s attempt to win her father’s freedom uncovers painful and dangerous secrets from her parents’ past through which she learns the true meaning of family and love.

Using funds raised from Kickstarter, fundraising parties held in the New York City area and Chicago, as well as personal savings, Ms. Nero had a total of $60,000 to start production on For the Cause.  Leveraging a combination of traditional and “guerrilla” filmmaking techniques, Ms. Nero, cast and crew spent 12 days shooting in Chicago in July 2012, successfully completing the first phase of the project.

Since the initial shoot last year, Ms. Nero has been working with her team to release a series of trailers in addition to completing a rough draft of the project.  Based on the strength of the story and high-caliber filmmaking, For the Cause was accepted into Black Harvest Film Festival, and is scheduled to screen in Chicago on August 3 and 8, 2013.

Ms. Nero is now making a full-court press to complete the film for Black Harvest and has returned to Kickstarter to raise the remaining funds for editing, color grading and sound design.  Ms. Nero noted, “This time around on Kickstarter, the stakes are higher and there’s even more risk with the tight deadline.  However, I feel very confident.  The film has already been shot and edited, responses to the teaser trailer have been overwhelmingly positive, and my collaborators are determined and committed to excellence.”

For the Cause runs on Kickstarter through July 27, 2013, 1:00 p.m. EST.  If the minimum goal of $15,000 is not reached by the end of the run, funds will not change hands.  Those interested in supporting the project should visit http://kck.st/10jgMLG to learn more.
