Celebrate Women’s Equality Day with a “Call to Action on Voter Rights and Responsibilities” Sunday, August 26, 2012, 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM African American Art & Culture Complex, Hall of Culture 762 Fulton St, San Francisco
San Francisco, CA (Sharewellnewswire.com) August 23, 2012 - Community leaders from the San Francisco Bay Area and around the state are gathering at the African American Art and Culture Complex in San Francisco on August 26th, nationally proclaimed Women’s Equality Day, for a provocative day of change agent conversation. Women's Equality Day, which was designated by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1971, commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution in 1920 guaranteeing women the right to vote, and recognizes that women's Constitutional rights were the culmination of a massive, peaceful, national movement by women that had its formal beginnings in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848.
To mark this day and voter challenges in 2012, Women’s Intercultural Network (WIN), California Women's Agenda (CAWA), CA NOW, the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women, Filipina Women's Network, the Center for Collaborative Planning, Southwest Airlines, and other partners are co-sponsoring a “Call to Action on Voter Rights & Responsibilities.” This dynamic forum will engage attendees with interactive panels, skill building sessions, issue briefings, and presentation of Circle of Courage Awards to California women leaders, legislators, and stakeholders for their advocacy and groundbreaking decision-making.
The four Circle of Courage awards given during the luncheon awards ceremony will honor California’s committed and courageous activists and legislators in priorities of health and social justice and is consistent with this United Nations’ Year of the Rural and Indigenous Women, Those honored include Congresswoman Lynne Woolsey, US House of Representatives, 6th District (Retiring January 2013); Graciela Martinez, American Friends Service Committee (Ret)/Proyecto Campasino; Roma Guy, Chair of State Health Access and CAWA Healthy Policy Chair,1996-2012; and Carol Norberg, veteran Feminist Activist and Advocacy Angel. The 2012 Jedi Knight Award will be presented to California State Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, 13th District, for his milestone efforts.
A special panel will set the stage and explore voters’ rights, suppression challenges, and other barriers emerging during this election year in California and other states. Featured panelists include Tiffany Mok, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU); Marily Mondejar, Filipina Women’s Network; and Patricia McGovern, President/Board of Directors, League of Women Voters of San Francisco. Farmworker women leaders from the Central Valley and indigenous tribal sister leaders from northern California will join and inform this critical dialogue.
Forum Emcee and Panel Moderator Rose Aguilar will also conduct a special skill-building session to amplify attendees’ voice in print, broadcast and social media, entitled “Women, Speak Out! Use Your Voice.” Rose Aguilar, who is host of Your Talk Radio, KALW 91.7 FM, brings award-winning expertise as author of "Red Highways: A Journey into the Heartland, as Op-Ed Contributor for Al Jazeera English and Truthout, and as a KPFK Commentator.
