US Wrestling Team Falls to Turkish Competition in Budapest

Coach still proud as all three competitors at Senior Worlds lose on points

The United States was unable to medal in the final day of the World Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary at the Papp Laszlo Sports Arena.

The US Greco-Roman wrestling team's Ellis Coleman, Andy Bisek, and Robbie Smith suffered losses to the athletes from Turkey in the last day of the seven-day event in the country that connects Europe to the Middle East.

Smith, who was enjoying his first Senior Worlds, dropped a 0-7 quarterfinal match to the reigning champion Riza Kayaalp of Turkey. Kayaalp had two arm throws in quick succession to end the match in the first minute.

Smith was eliminated when Kayaalp suffered an unexpected loss by Ran's Amir Ali Akbari in the semifinals. Kayaalp had to reach the finals to see Smith receive an opportunity for repechage.

“I just need to learn from this and come back strong next year,” Smith said. “I’m going to work hard and learn from this experience.”

Bisek, who was competing in his second Senior Worlds, opened up with a 2-1 victory of Balint Korpusi of Hungary, but suffered a 3-1 second-round shortcoming to Turkey's Emrah Kus. Bisek, who was called for passivity only moments following a spinning behind Kus for during a takedown. Kuz was given a point which put Bisek down in par terre. Kus then scored a front headlock and moved ahead to 3-0. Bisek was able to score with a pushout late but it was not enough and he fell to points.

“I think I’m right there with the top guys,” Bisek said. “I have plenty of stuff I want to work on when I get back to training again.”

Coleman was unlucky in a close decision loss to Yusel Atakan of Turkey. Coleman struck first but Atakan came on strong with a surge to put the bout at 2-2. The Turkish competitor then gained a point of being the last to score.

“I should have been ready and more prepared, but I’m not making any excuses,” Coleman said. “I shouldn’t have got turned. I didn’t perform and I didn’t get the task done.”

“I am proud of the whole team,” U.S.A. Coach Steve Fraser said. “We are all disappointed we didn’t get a medal obviously. We’ve got to keep improving.”
