PETA Slammed for New Campaign Targeting Women over 175 Pounds

Animal rights organization PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has come under fire for suggesting that women " adopt a vegan diet in order to lose weight".

Following news that the emergency contraceptive Plan B One Step loses effectiveness on women over 165 pounds, and doesn’t work at all on those over 176 pounds, PETA proposed it’s Plan V program, to encourage women to lose weight by going vegan, noting that vegans are 18 percent thinner than thinner than non vegans.

PETA Executive Vice PResident Tracy Reiman, emphasized the statements remarked by her coworker. “If extra pounds are thwarting a woman’s ability to use Plan B, PETA’s Plan V could be the prescription they need”. She says going vegan is a great way to lose weight and get healthy, and could also help them regain their own control over their reproductive lives.

Weight experts have warned against PETA’s suggestions, saying the organization is sending the wrong message to women. Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams called the statement moronic, and PETA’s apparent assumption that any female of childbearing age needs to hit a certain weight limit, regardless of BMI, fitness level or height, which is too simplistic.

Emily Dhurandhar, an obesity researcher at the University of Alabama, admitted that PETA’s suggestion is an example of the fact that simplification is too prevalent in our society today. Dr. Dhurandhar said that it also compounds the bias that weight loss is simply and that people are choosing to be overweight, and how it’s an issue of personal responsibility, which isn’t the case by far.

OB/GYN Dr. Jennifer Ashton said that regardless of diet, all forms of hormonal contraception can be potentially decreased in effectiveness for women with higher body weights.
