World of Appearances

Improvements in career and personal relationships have been reported after orthodontic treatment

A new study was recently conducted for National Orthodontic Health Month in October by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). The study focused on adult individuals who had treatment provided by orthodontists. The results of the survey showed that adult orthodontic treatment contributed to significant improvements in both personal and professional lives.

Seventy-five percent of those surveyed attributed their improved personal or career relationships to newfound self-confidence and their new post-orthodontic treatment smile. Ninety-two percent of the respondents would suggest orthodontic treatment to others. Pre-treatment queried respondents voiced concerns to questions such as “Am I too old?”,  “How will I look?” and “What will others think?” Prior to treatment, seventy-one percent had such concerns but once treatment actually began, an overwhelming majority no longer had such concerns.

President of the AAO, Gayle Glenn, DDS, MSD says, “This survey validates that a healthy, beautiful smile can be a critical factor when it comes to personal and professional success. Adults are seeking treatment in record numbers and we encourage anyone, at any age, to consult an orthodontist to learn if they could benefit from treatment. It’s never too late to move healthy teeth.”

AAO members reported an increase of 14 percent in adult patients from 2010 to 2012 (1,225,850 patients ages 18 and older), which is a record high. Members also reported an increase of 20 percent in total patients (5,876,000) in 2012, when compared to 2010. More adult men were also reported to be seeking orthodontic treatment, according to the study. In 2012 survey results, 44 percent of adult patients were male; a 29 percent increase from the 2010 results.
