There is a new taxicab company in Bakersfield, California and it is all electric. The Electric Taxi Cab Company just opened its doors with the idea of doing their part to help the environment. Other cities such as New York and Los Angeles have full electric vehicles but we are the first service available in Bakersfield, says Refugio Carrillo, owner of the company. A few of the 65 cab companies in Bakersfield offer hybrid vehicles but we are the first to offer full electric taxi vehicles.
Carrillo says he saw a tremendous need that was not being met by any of the other companies. "Just like old saying goes in real estate, location, location, location. We have air quality issues here, Bakersfield is number one in air pollution," he said. "There is a problem and we have a solution." Over a year ago, Carrillo formed the business in Delano and has built it up to expand into the Arvin, Shafter and Bakersfield areas.
There is no discount for being green since the rates are regulated but at least his customers know they are doing their part to improve the environment. "The fare we charge is established by the city and county and we cannot deviate from those prices, but we hope customers would choose to use our service because of what we offer," Carrillo said.
Carbon dioxide emissions can be very small if the sources of the electricity come from solar and wind generators and the vehicles emit no direct pollution. In 2012, a report published by The Union of Concerned Scientists found that for 45% of the United States population, an electric car would generate lower CO2 emissions when compared to a 50 mpg gasoline powered car.
