New Study Finds College Students Sleep Deprived

Lack of sleep can account for the failings elsewhere

Ernest Hemingway put it best, as he often did, when he said: “I love sleep. My life has the tendency to fall apart when I’m awake, you know.”

There are a great many college students who can sympathize with Hemingway's statement. And their own trouble with falling asleep and staying asleep may now be a rather important clue into why they are struggling in their educational endeavors.

More colleges students are feeling the effects of a lack of sleep these days, and it is worse than ever before. Meanwhile, a good night's sleep is one of the most important and necessary activities to make sure one can succeed in any-and-all endeavors.

“I try to sleep at least eight hours a night. I personally do much worse on school work and tests when I try to cram, only get a little sleep and drink caffeine to stay awake. When I get about eight hours of sleep I feel like I retain more of what I’ve been studying and feel better and stay healthier. It’s a struggle to get enough sleep though with the workload that comes along with being in college,” said junior Communications major Jessi McPhail.

A study published in the Journal of American College Health stated that “college students are among the most sleep-deprived age group in the U.S. It can have detrimental effects on daily performance, including academics and driving, and has also been linked to depressed mood and behavioral problems.”

So why are so many college students sleep deprived would be the most logical question. Some might say it has to do with so many being involved in so many aspects of life. College, work, and social life can all play into the problem. And all of these activities involve procrastination of necessary studying and school work. All of that means that time which should be allocated for sleep is instead dedicated to catching up with the activities that will keep a person enrolled in a University at all.

“With so many classes and assignments it’s really easy to procrastinate which in turn means you’re probably going to lose some sleep trying to cram everything in the last minute,” added Jessi.
