Ex-NBA star Chris Herron talks of previous Addiction and Recovery

In a special September assembly, Herron explained his time in drug rehab to students at Saint Stephen's Upper School.

Chris Herron was a talented basketball player and standout point guard at Fresno State, but even though he was drafted into the National Basketball Association, his career fell apart due to a drug addiction that haunted him for most of his adult life. Now, just five years after a drug rehab counselor told him he should consider himself dead, he’s motivating students to stay away from drugs in a turnaround of his life.

Herron talked to Saint Stephen’s students about his hard and troubling journey from a star to a drug addict and how he worked hard to overcome his addiction. He also explained that his mission is now helping teens overcome addiction and stay away from the temptations of drugs. As he was talking to the students, he remembered when he was in high school and his principal but in a lecturer to talk about drug addiction to students, but back then he thought it was a waste of time because he felt above it.

However, as an adult, his first experience with drugs came just out of high school as a freshman at Boston College. He was featured in a two-page spread in Sports Illustrated and attended Boston College on an athletic scholarship and that is where he tried cocaine for the first time. Unfortunately, the night he was supposed to take the court as a member of the Boston Celtics, he couldn’t play without the pain killers he had become addicted to. After several relapses, his wife kicked him out and filed a restraining order. It’s been since then that he’s dedicated his life to sharing his story to everyone from the U.S. Army to the National Football League players.
