City sewer and stormwater backed up in Everett, Washington during severe thunderstorms between August 29th and September 3rd, leaving some homes and apartment buildings damaged from the floods that ensued. Maritza Garcia, an apartment lease remembers the the damage done to her apartment.
“I opened the door and suddenly a gush of water came in the apartment,”, she said. Garcia now says she and her family, including a newborn baby, are dealing with a mold problem that is a huge concern for her. The newborn has since started sneezing, and she and several of her former neighbors have moved as a result of the damage left behind.
According to Garcia, the water damage in her apartment building was 5-10 inches. Luckily, residents told Everett City Council how tough its been cleaning up the mess, and since being turned down for claims sent in by their insurance companies, they are looking to the city for financial help.
The council agreed last Wednesday to help settle a resolution with qualified homeowners to help them get back on track and the city a clearer direction of how to move forward. Homeowners and apartment complex leasors need to contact the city to file a claim as soon as they can, especially if they have had any sewer backup due to the storms. Claims can be filed on City of Everett website.
