BBQ Cultivates Team-Building Qualities for Businesses

There's more than simply making a tasty meal

Competition attracts business when it comes to the American Royal's barbecue competition. The reason is because the event cultivates a very special ingredient: team-building.

The American Royal has over 600 barbecue teams that compete in the open class, and many teams are sponsored by employers that are keen on the event due to its ability to create strong teamwork amongst those involved.

“It was a great team-building exercise and helped the community,” Waddell & Reed spokesman Roger Hoadley said. “Doing it for a greater cause really helped bring people together. It was a very unique event, and a lot of employees participated.”

Waddell and Reed sponsored the Gone Hoggin' as a representative team for the American Royal. Drew Henderson, who works as a specialist in web marketing, was chosen as leader since he was the only member who had previously competed.

“The employees on the team are from several different groups within our company,” Henderson said. “So it brought together people who don’t always talk with each other on a regular basis. I think we all knew each other but had never worked together. So it brought different parts of the business together, and we all learned more about the company as a whole.”

Business skill is required for such an event, and the teams involved have to figure out items like budgeting, supplies, revenue estimates, and log/banner creations to attract the right amount of business to overcome the competition.

“We’re having a blast,” Henderson said. “It’s been a lot of fun. Everyone is getting the itch to do this more. Now that we’ve done one, we’re brainstorming ideas about what to do different next year at work if we do this again. We’re running with it and having fun.”
